Love Thyself II-The Origin of Love

Florencia and I both stared at each other across the classroom, perplexed, as we listened to my Science Professor rattle a definition that sounded like Greek. “Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a lower solute concentration to a higher solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane

“What does this even mean? Why do I need to know this?… And how do I apply it to my life to get a job?” my mind raced as I struggled to comprehend this concept.

Back in Middle school, there were so many scientific principles we memorized that we figured we only needed to know to pass our exams. Now, I am understanding that from the Heisenberg’s Principle of Uncertainty of an atom, to the Big Bang Theory of the Universe, we realize the most important thing in life...We are so loved!

The origin of the word love comes from the Hebrew word,  אהבה, (Ahava) which means to give. Since we are not self-sustaining beings, we are given life by God, the Universe, Mother Nature... Whatever this entity is known to you as, we can all attest to its sustenance and the provision of our vital needs: oxygen, food, water, clothing, shelter, and company.

Why are we being provided and sustained for? It is because we are LOVED!

“For God so loved the world, that He GAVE his only begotten son…”(John 3:16)

One of the effects of love is its binding effect to an object of affection to become one (Love Thyself Introduction). When we apply this principle of oneness, we can infer that we are one with Nature, since it provides us with sustenance. We know this to be true as there is scientific evidence to prove that we are made up of the same elements found in all forms of life.

We are one with Nature.

Since I began to apply this principle of oneness to life, I no longer struggle to understand scientific concepts since Science is the study of Life in all its forms.

Let’s consider two solutions, A and B, separated by a membrane. If solution A is made up of water and salt, and solution B is only water, with time, the water in solution B will move towards solution A, till they become one solution. This is the process of Osmosis my Science professor stated. However he did not explain why this movement occurs. This is my understanding using the Principle of Oneness. Water molecules are attracted to each other as they are made of the same elements, so they will naturally flow to become one when separated. This attractive force, known by different names Hydrogen Bonding, Ionic Bonding, Van der Waals Forces of attraction results in the movement. Have you ever wondered why when you keep your wired headphones or jewelry separated, they will emerge as one and tangled up? Substances of the same elements move together to become one.

This principle is so universal that it is applied in all areas of scientific application from the use of Hydroelectric Power, to the firing of neurons in our bodies. Knowing that there is a strong force that attracts elements together, scientists have found ways to create gradients, which is simply a separation of  like substances such as the electrochemical, electromagnetic, and concentration gradient.

Consider an electrochemical gradient for example; water is blocked off by a wall known as a dam so that it builds up a force capable of turning turbines to generate electricity. The reason this force exists is the beauty of the water behind the wall, pushing to become one with the water below the dam. This blockade of water generates a powerful energy, Potential energy, that is converted to kinetic energy when water is allowed to flow. This same principle harnesses electricity and explains the reason electrons move from the negative to the positive end in batteries to produce current. It also explains why the north and south poles of magnets are attracted to each other, and the reason nutrients and water can move in and out of our cells to keep our bodies functioning.

Nature hates separation.

How does the principle of oneness apply to us? I am still seeking insight on how attractive forces differ in living entities. What is strikingly similar is that we humans also seek to be one with our loved ones. We crave closeness and intimacy when we love someone, so we tend to gravitate towards people and situations that spike up our dopamine levels. After all, the highest expression of love in human form is lovemaking, which is a physical joining of our most private parts with another to become one. Perhaps, the driving force of love to become one as seen in humans, is the same attractive force that draws elements to become one. If I could speak to the waters, I’d ask them what keeps their individual drops together to appear as one mighty ocean, but I'm only human.

Knowing that we are loved, provided for, and seen as one with something greater than ourselves, we are assured that everything will work out in our favor. Just as we do not have to worry about where or when our next breath will come from, nor whether the sun will rise tomorrow, let’s believe that we will pass our exams, our next meal will be provided, we will find the right job, and the right person. Our needs will naturally gravitate towards us, when we stay true to our elements and keep doing the work.

You are loved, so all your needs will be provided for in accordance with the very nature of God. Just as He created the infinite abundance of the bottomless ocean, and the great vastness of the universe, you will be provided for, according to the abundance of His nature. This is the origin of Love.

“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.”(1 John 4:16)

In the next blog, we will discuss love languages and attachment theories of love.

Till we meet again,

Keep the crown upright, and your elements attractive.
